Summer often brings with it the expectation of memorable moments. We look forward to vacations, celebrations, family gatherings, and special events. We take pictures, make plans, and create memories that we hope will last for years.
But most of life is not made up of extraordinary moments. Most of life happens in the ordinary.
We spend our days doing familiar things, like going to work, caring for family, mowing the lawn, shopping for groceries, preparing meals, and completing countless tasks that rarely make photo albums. Sometimes these ordinary routines begin to feel repetitive, like nothing significant is happening at all.
Yet throughout Scripture, God often works in the ordinary moments of life.
Moses was tending sheep when God called him. David was caring for his father’s flock when he was anointed king. Several of Jesus’ disciples were simply doing their jobs when He invited them to follow Him. God frequently meets people not in grand events, but in the everyday rhythms of life.
The apostle Paul reminds us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). Those words suggest that even ordinary tasks can become acts of worship when done with gratitude and faithfulness.
This July, as you enjoy the special moments of summer, don’t overlook the ordinary ones. Take time to notice God’s presence in the small things. Enjoy a conversation with a neighbor. Sit quietly and appreciate the beauty of God’s creation. Offer a word of encouragement to someone who needs it. Pause to thank God for the blessings that are so easily taken for granted.
Often, when we look back on life, we discover that God was at work in ways we never noticed at the time. He was shaping our character, strengthening our faith, and using seemingly insignificant moments for His purposes.
My prayer is that this summer be filled not only with memorable events but also with a renewed awareness that God is present in the ordinary. His faithfulness is found not just in the mountaintop experiences, but in the daily walk as well. May you experience His presence and peace throughout these summer days.
