Pastor’s Thoughts for January, 2026

Can you believe that it is 2026?!?! It is. The calendar has turned, and once again we find ourselves standing at the threshold of a new year. There’s something powerful, perhaps frightening, about this time of year. The days ahead are still unwritten. The routines haven’t settled in yet. For just a brief pause, we are reminded that new beginnings are possible.

For some, the New Year arrives with excitement and hope. Goals are set. Dreams feel within reach. There’s energy in the air and anticipation in the heart. For others, the turning of the year feels heavier. The past twelve months may have brought loss, disappointment, unanswered prayers, or deep weariness. The phrase “Happy New Year” may feel more like a wish than a reality.

The good news is this: the promise of a new year does not depend on how strong we feel or how successful the last one was. It rests on the unchanging faithfulness of God.
Scripture reminds us, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22–23). Notice what that verse doesn’t say. It doesn’t say God’s mercy renews once a year. It says it is new every morning. Even before January 1st arrived, God was already in the business of making things new.

A new year does not erase the past, but it does invite us to carry it differently. We don’t step forward alone, dragging yesterday’s burdens by our own strength. We move ahead with a God who goes before us, walks beside us, and holds us when the road grows difficult. The same God who was faithful in the last year will be faithful in the one ahead.

This is a good time to pause and reflect. Not just on what we want to change, but on what we want to trust God with. Instead of asking, “What can I accomplish this year?” perhaps we ask, “Who is God calling me to become?” Growth in faith often looks less like grand resolutions and more like daily surrender: choosing prayer over panic, gratitude over grumbling, and trust over fear.

The New Year also reminds us that hope is always appropriate for God’s people. Not because life is predictable, but because God is dependable. Even if the path ahead includes challenges we cannot yet see, we walk into it with the assurance that God’s grace will meet us there. His provision will be sufficient. His presence will be constant.

As this year begins, may we loosen our grip on what weighs us down and open our hands to receive what God wants to give. May we enter these new days with humility, courage, and expectation. And may we remember that every step forward, no matter how small, is held securely in the hands of a faithful God.
A new year has begun. God is not surprised by it. He is already there. And He is already at work.
